Should you carry around your Chihuahua?

If you can resist you are made of sterner stuff than I.  Chi's love to be carried but should you do it?  This rather depends on you.  It seems that there is no evidence that it does them any harm - indeed, it possibly keeps them out of harms way.  The up-side is that having a companion dog that likes to be with you so much can be a very pleasant thing.  So what's the down-side?

Now the down side is very debatable of course so how do you feel about the following points?

  • If you carry her too much, she will want you to carry her all the time
  •
You may find that you become identified as the preferred person "honoured" with the carrying
  • Once you begin doing this it will break your heart to deny her
  • Can you really do any work around the place with only one available arm?

Ok, so may be some of the above are a problem then but what do you do if you've already started to do this carrying?  Well don't despair.  Chi's are creatures of habit, and if you get her used to being picked up but put down again shortly after in a comfortable and safe place she will get used to it - try it.

On a side-note, we don't feel Chihuahuas are accessories (if misinterpreting the banner).  They just love to be carried!  Carry your Chi responsibly if you do carry her - she is expecting you to protect her so don't take her anywhere you will forget you have her with you - she must be your number one priority when she's with you, if that's not possible make other more thoughtful arrangements please!
